Marchantia foliacea

Family Marchantiaceae

Marchantia foliacea has a bright green and glossy thallus divided into polygonal areas, each with an air pore. Gemmae cups are circular with a toothed and ciliate rim. The margin is slightly wavy, translucent and narrow. The ventral surface varies from green in shaded, moist areas to purple-green when growing in more exposed locations. The ventral surface has numerous rhizoids and a row of scales to either side of the mid-line. Each scale bears an appendage of variable size and shape with a smooth margin.

Widespread in New Zealand in moist and protected ares to more exposed and drier conditions.
