Daltonia splachnoides is a small plant up to 1 cm tall, tufted on small branches or twigs. Stems are simple or branched and with a dense felt of rhizoids (tomentum). Leaves are spirally arranged, linear-lanceolat and recurved with smooth (entire) margins and a conspicuous border of linear cells. The capsule covering (calyptra) is conical (mitrate) with a fringed base. When capsules are mature they are held erect.
Widespread in New Zealand in moist, forested areas.
