Hibiscus diversifolius - prickly hibiscus

Mallow family: Malvaceae

Hibiscus diversifolius is many branched shrub forming intertangled thickets characterised by hairs and larger sharp prickles on both branches and leaf stalks. The lobed leaf blades are very rough to the touch. A species widespread in the Pacific, Africa and South America.
Found in the northern most portion of the North Island in wetlands and stream margins.
