Dicksonia fibrosa forms very stout trunks thickly covered by interwoven red-brown roots. Fronds are harsh to the touch, short-stalked, narrow and held erect. Dead fronds are persistent forming a dense skirt around the trunk.
An endemic species found throughout New Zealand.
