Ceratodon purpureus

Family: Ditrichaceae

Ceratodon purpureus is a small mat-forming moss with stems 5-15 mm in hight. The leaf margin is rolled under (revolute ) from base to near the tip and has a prominent vein (nerve). A few small teeth are often present near the leaf apex. When dry the leaves are twisted and often radiate out at the stem apex. The sporophyte seta (stalk) and capsule have a distinctive reddish-purple hue. The capsule has deep longitudinal furrows and the 16 peristome teeth are all joined together at the base; each tooth is split above into two long fine branches.  

Widespread in New Zealand on earth, sand or rock, often in exposed or polluted areas such as highway shoulders and mine tailings. Worldwide in distribution.
