Allisonia cockaynei forms a small, 12-14 mm wide and up to 3 cm long thallus with undulate margins. Male plants form globular antheridia close to the tip of the thallus and female plants form archegonia enclosed by a ring of bracts along the midrib.
An endemic family and endemic genus, widespread in New Zealand on stream sides and open alpine areas.
