Dumortiera hirsuta has a branching and lobed thallus with undulate margins that clings loosely to the substrate. The dorsal epidermis lacks air pores. Female and male gametangia are borne on erect branches of the thallus called archegoniophores (female) and antheriodiophores (male).
Widespread in New Zealand on moist soil.
